Vintage posters, modern prints, photos and women artists are all potential growth areas in the art market. This is the conclusion of the auction search engine Barnebys. The company’s latest online report, “Tomorrow – The View From Today,” is based on analysis of more than 65 million lots sold by more than 3,000 auction houses globally.Barnebys noted significant growth in sales in lower price ranges, combined with demographic profiles of the search engine’s users. These factors point to new audiences joining what has largely been an art, antiques and collectibles market until now. The data covers almost 16.4 million user sessions relating to nearly 5 million lots.Barnebys has previously pointed to the growth of interest in female artists.“History offered fewer opportunities for women to dedicate their lives to careers in art and design, so there is simply less art by recognized female talent around, with the result that the market for art by women has traditionally been far less developed than that by men,” Barnebys co-founder Pontus Silfverstolpe said in an e-mailed release. The list of women artists that Silfverstolpe recommends for investment includes: Jenny Saville, Cecily Brown, Georgia O’Keeffe, Joan Mitchell, Nathalie Djurberg, Petra Cortright, Cady Noland, Agnes Martin, Laura Owens, Yayoi Kusama, Njideka Akunyili Crosby and Barbara Kreuger.Retrospectives for Frida Kahlo in London and Mary Cassatt in Paris also raised attention, Silfverstolpe said: “Sales online will flourish as buyers try to snap up the best art by women before prices rocket.”Many of the growing fields “offer a lot of bang for your buck at the lower end, with starting prices at less than €100,” Barnebys notes. This is the level that many buyers are already spending at. Sales at this price level have increased by a third in the last year. As that interest grows, so they start to look around further and notice more expensive items that attract their interest, such as drawings, paintings and designer furniture.Barnebys is the world’s largest auction-search engine or aggregator with more than half a million items for sale at any one time. It says the top-searched brand is Rolex and top-searched artists are led by Pablo Picasso, Jeff Koons and Banksy. http://www.blouinartinfo.comFounder Louise Blouin
