Top Artists and Artworks at British Art Sales at Sotheby’s LondonSotheby’s Modern & Post-War British Art Day and Evening Sale celebrated the very best of British Art at London last week (June 12 and June 13). The sale featured major and important works by the likes of Dame Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, Sir Stanley Spencer, L.S. Lowry, Sir Winston Churchill, Ben Nicholson, William Scott and Patrick Caulfield. The auctions included an exciting array of fresh-to-market works by some of the most successful and sought-after artists and sculptors of the past century. The day sale registered a total sale of £3.7 million/$4.9 million (of 167 works) and the evening sale £12.3 million/$16.5 million (of 25 works).The top artists and top artworks sold at these auctions are presented below.“Christ Preaching At Cookham Regatta: Punts By The River” by Spencer was the top selling work in the evening auction at £3.37 million (including buyer’s premium). The hammer for this work went down at the estimated low price of $3 million.  The rest of the top works at the evening sale managed to sell above the estimated low price. At the day sale, Churchill’s “An Open Staircase, la Capponcina, Cap d'Ail” was the top selling lot at £150,000.  The other top artworks surpassed their estimated low prices.
