Sotheby’s London will auction the Carbisdale Castle Collection of sculptures May 20, a collection that has been off the market for more than a century. The collection of 17 Victorian marble sculptures will be offered together with an array of 36 Italian and Scottish nineteenth-century paintings, most of which are quality copies of Old Masters, and one nineteenth-century textile. The collective group is estimated to bring a combined total of £500,000 ($761,350) as part of the Sotheby’s 19th and 20th Century Sculpture auction.“Encompassing the elegant Neoclassicism of the early part of the century to the fantastical Romanticism of the Belle Époque years, the works on offer shine a light not only on the collecting tastes at the height of the British Empire, but also how sculptors of the period created astonishing beauty and grace through their masterful handling of marble,” stated Christopher Mason of the collection, Sotheby’s European Sculpture specialist.Highlights of the sale include Pasquale Romanelli’s “Andromeda” estimated at £80,000-120,000 ($121,816-182,724). The sculpture, unlike most artistic representations of the myth, depicts Andromeda in the midst of her peril, seemingly setting eyes on the monster for the first time.Others include Romanelli’s “Venus and Cupid” estimated at £60,000-80,0000 ($91,362-121,816), Johann Christian Lotsch’s “Cupid in Response” estimated at £40,000-60,0000 ($60,908-91,362), David Watson Stevenson’s “Nymph at the Stream” estimated at £50,000-70,000 ($76,135-106,589), and Lawrence Macdonald’s “Venus” estimated at £30,000-50,000 ($45,681-76,135).The sculpture collection previously occupied the magnificent Carbisdale Scots Baronial residence in the heart of the Highlands and is on offer by the Scottish Youth Hostels Association (SYHA), which manages the residence. The proceeds of the Carbisdale collection sale will be used to sustain SYHA’s diverse youth hostel network.Sotheby's London sale of 19th and 20th Century Sculpture will take place May 20.Follow @UK_ARTINFO
