On July 22, Sotheby’s New York will host their inaugural Contemporary Living sale with a selection of roughly 250 works mixing the categories of photography, prints, and 20th century design. With estimates ranging from $300 to $300,000, the works in the sale carry heavyweight names including Diane Arbus, David Hockney, Ellsworth Kelly, George Nakashima, Helmut Newton, Mies van der Rohe, and Andy Warhol. Andy Warhol’s Cowboys and Indians (Feldman & Schellmann II. 377-386), a portfolio of ten colored screenprints from 1986, will be hitting the auction block with an estimate of $200,000-to-$300,000. Also on offer is Helmut Newtown’s gelatin silver print from 1986, Two Playmates, Hollywood, with an estimate of $25,000-to-$35,000, and George Nakashima’s 1976 American black walnut and East Indian rosewood “Trestle” dining table, expected to sell between $15,000 and $20,000. The sale seems curated to attract a similar clientelle to that shopping at Christie's First Open sales, which have expanded with numerous online iterations in recent months. Sotheby's particular mix of prints, photography, and high-end design is unique in the marketplace and seems to reflect an increasing industry-wide interest in serving crossover collectors with varied interests but a keen eye for blue-chip names.
