The 2015 Concours d’Elegance and its attendant classic car auctions, taking place August 13 through 16 in the stunning oceanside surroundings of Carmel and Monterey, probably won’t see a repeat of last year’s $38-million record-setting Ferrari GTO. But there are plenty of other top-class offerings of American and European marques in this sought-after arena.At Quail Lodge, Bonhams, the firm that sold the record Ferrari last summer, notching the highest price for any car ever sold at auction, will tender a rare ex–Lou Fageol 1953 Fiat 8V Supersonic with coachwork by Ghia. Pegged at $1.8 million to $2.4 million, it goes on the block August 14. Also in the mix is a race-proven 1948 Aston Martin 2-liter works team car with wire wheels and red leather interior, estimated at $600,000 to $900,000.On August 15 in Monterey, Russo and Steele expects a low-production-number 1963 Ferrari 250 GT/L “Lusso,” a luxe version of its racier cousin, to pull in seven figures. That day the high-horsepower brigade can also head over to RM Sotheby’s, which anticipates its 1950 Ferrari 275S/340 America Barchetta will hurdle the $8 million mark, and that a low-slung exotic 1976 Lamborghini Countach LP 400 “Periscopio” will bring in a hoped-for $1.5 million to $2 million.At Gooding & Company’s August 16 auction, a streamlined 1933 Delage D8 S Cabriolet in custard yellow with coach-work by Pourtout is expected to fetch $1.5 million to $1.8 million, while a racing circuit–tested 1973 Porsche 911 Carrera 2.7 RS Lightweight is pegged at $1 million to $1.2 million.“We’re still seeing records set at every auction,” said David Kinney, publisher of the industry-read Hagerty Price Guide. “But the cars that the records are being set on have transferred down the line, money-wise, from the $15 million cars to the million-dollar-and-under cars.”A version of this article appears in the July/August issue of Art + Auction.
