Sotheby’s Hong Kong Fine Chinese Paintings Autumn Sale returns to the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center on October 6 with a selection of 300 works estimated to be worth a combined total of HK$160 million (US$20 million).Led by modern Chinese masters such as Zhang Daqian, Fu Baoshi, Huang Binhong, and Wu Guanzhong, the sale will include such highlights as Fu Baoshi’s “On the Train to Sinaia” (1957, estimate: HK$8-12 million, US$1-1.5 million), one of the pieces created during Fu’s three-month tour throughout Eastern Europe in 1957 that represents a rare application of traditional Chinese ink techniques to foreign landscapes; Zhang Daqian’s “Spring Clouds on a Rural River” (1965, estimate: HK$8-12 million, US$1-1.5 million), a splashed ink and color on paper work from Zhang’s most acclaimed period inspired by a verse by the Southern Song dynasty poet Zhao Shixiu; and Fu Baoshi’s “Beauties” (1945, estimate: HK$15-20 million, US$1.9-2.6 million), a hanging scroll depicting Xiang Jun and Lady Xiang, the two characters from Qu Yuan’s “Nine Songs,” seeming to glide with effortless grace across a vast backdrop.In addition, there will be a special showcase entitled “Chinese Paintings & Calligraphy from 20th Century Masters: The Goldbell Collection,” which features more than a dozen artists including Zhang Daqian, Xu Beihong, Qi Baishi, Lin Fengmian, and Pan Tianshou (details to be confirmed).C.K.
