The Lord Beaverbrook Collection at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury

An eclectic assortment of furniture and works of art from Cherkley Court in Surrey, England—the former home of William Maxwell Aitken, the first Lord Beaverbrook—will be up for sale across four auctions at Dreweatts & Bloomsbury’s Donnington Priory salesroom in February and March. The collection will be sold to benefit the Beaverbrook Foundation.Built in 1866 and rebuilt in French chateau style in 1893, the late Victorian mansion was purchased in 1911 by Lord Beaverbrook, owner of The Express Newspaper group, Minister for Information in World War I, and Minister of Aircraft in World War II. The home hosted several politicians, writers, and musicians of the 20th century, including: Winston Churchill, Lloyd George, Joe Kennedy, Ian Fleming, and others.The first part of the collection will be offered at the Interiors auction on February 24 and will comprise lots 300 to 372. Highlights include: A chaise lounge from a bedroom suite (est. £1,000–1,500; $1,400–2,200); a 19th century bronzed gilt carved wood console table in 18th century Baroque taste (est. £1,000–1,500; $1,400–2,200); and a pair of ivory painted and parcel-gilt table vitrines in Louis XIV style, from the late 19th to early 20th century (est. £2,000–3,000; $2,900–4,300).The remaining lots will be offered in the following sales: the Jewelry, Silver & Watches auction on March 2; the Fine Jewelry, Silver & Watches sale on March 16; and the Fine Furniture, Ceramics & Works of Art auction on March 30.
