A series of rare woodcuts by Edvard Munch will headline a forthcoming sale at Sotheby’s London of prints and multiples.
The auction, on September 17, 2013, will see Munch’s Evening, Melancholy I and Two Women on the Shore, estimated at £550,000-£750,000 and £400,000-£500,000 respectively go under the hammer alongside pieces by Rembrandt, Picasso and Warhol.
Eight etchings by Rembrandt spanning from 1630-1642 will appear – mostly self-portraits, with the artist depicting a range of expressions. Examples include Self-portrait, frowning: bust (est. £5,000-£7,000) and Self-portrait leaning on a stone still (£8,000-£12,000).
The sale will also include a number of items from collector Stanley J. Seeger such as several Picasso works, including the artists’s first known monotype, Portrait de femme à la mantille (late 1905), which was originally made on glass, though Seeger’s version is the only known proof done on paper (estimated at £60,000-80,000).
The piece will join several Picasso ceramics including plates, vases, jugs, bowls and tiles, depicting a range of classical and mythical forms alongside portraits of animals and people. These works range in price from £800 to £15,000.
