Christie’s will offer works by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde, Jehangir Sabavala, Maqbool Fida Husain, Jamini Roy, Bhupen Khakhar, Ramkinkar Baij, Meera Mukherjee, Sadanand Bakre, and Himmat Shah during its South Asian Modern + Contemporary Art sale in London on May 26.Leading the sale is a large, pivotal oil on canvas painting from 1958 by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde (estimate: £800,000-£1,200,000) that Christie’s says is one of the first examples of Gaitonde’s radical shift to a fundamentally non-objective form of art. Also included in the sale is another large oil-on-canvas painting by Vasudeo S. Gaitonde dating from 1975 (estimate: £400,000-600,000), which is being offered from the family collection of his close friend, the artist Ram Kumar. In anticipation of Bhupen Khakhar’s first UK major solo retrospective opening at the Tate Modern in June, Christie’s will offer there works by the artist including the oil on canvas “At New Jersey” 1986 (estimate: £50,000-£70,000).Other highlights include Jehangir Sabavala’s “The Bridge” 2005 (estimate: £200,000-£300,000), two private collections of works by Jamini Roy, and modern Indian avant-garde sculptures by Ramkinkar Baij, Meera Mukherjee, Sadanand Bakre, and Himmat Shah.
