An iconic late work by painter Kim Whan-Ki headlines K Auction’s Korea-focused sale of modern and contemporary art May 29 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong, which organizers have estimated will bring in $8.2 million.“Untitled,” 1964-1965, a painting in shades of blue, features repeating dots in conversation with lines and larger round patches of color. Fans of Kim will see in this painting the origins of what came to be known as his New York period, characterized by canvases filled, mosaic-like, with his trademark dots. The piece, estimated at $875,000 to $1.3 million, is one of five Kim paintings due to go up on the block.Kim is joined at the 68-lot sale by a diverse group of his compatriots, including three Dansaekhwa masters: Chung Sang Hwa, Park Seo-bo, and Lee Ufan. Particularly notable from this group are four paintings from Park’s minimalist “Ecriture” series. The series, which has spanned Park’s career, is defined by the use of repeating wavelike patterns on solid backgrounds of muted color. K Auction expects “Ecriture No.214-85” to attract the most attention of the Parks. The painting carries an estimate of $528,000 to $708,000.K Auction is complementing the Korean art up for sale with selected pieces from other well-known artists, including Picasso, de Kooning, and Yue Minjun.K Auction’s Modern and Contemporary Art Hong Kong Sale takes place May 29 at the Grand Hyatt Hong Kong.
