When: Auction of Important Australian and International Fine Art at Deutscher and Hackett, Sydney, on September 13, 2016.What: The auction brings together some of the most prolific selections of Australian and international paintings. With a lot of 117 artworks up for auction, the sale offers collectors a wide selection of works from as early as 1892.Highlights:- A painting by Australian avant-garde artist Brett Whiteley (1939 – 1992). Washing the Salt off III, 1985, is oil on canvas on a composition board, signed, dated, and inscribed with the title. It poignantly captures the sexual revolution of the 80s sweeping Australia at the time, featuring a topless bather arching gracefully away from the viewer as she balances on one foot to wash sand off the other. (Estimate: $650,000 – $ 850,000)- Australian-born Italy-based artist Jeffrey Smart’s work Paringa, 1951, oil on canvas, signed and dated on the lower right. One of those rare and early Jeffrey Smart paintings which, with the subject centering on South Australia, still remains in private hands. The painting is a perfect mesh of colour and composition and explores the artist’s fascination with form and its exploitation as metaphors of the modern world of vehicles and transportation. (Estimate: $200,000 – $ 300,000)- A mesmerizing work by Australian landscape artist Lloyd Rees, Sunset on the Omega Hills, 1948, oil on canvas. Signed on lower and inscribed with title verso the artwork resonates Ree’s technique and inspiration that of landscapes with individual grandeur found in the harmony of man and nature. (Estimate: $180,000 – $ 240,000)- Acacia Saplings, c.1074, oil on canvas by Australian painter and printmaker Fred Williams. The painting is a reflection of spring and regeneration coincided with Williams’ own creative developments, especially the use of a more diverse and richer palette and is composed of three compositional bands. (Estimate: $280,000 – 340,000)- Morning Tallabanna, 1998, by Australian painter William Robinson was acquired from the artist in December 1998. Tallabanna is a rainforest and a Eucalyptus forest. This work came after many visits where Robinson walked and observed and at other times made studies of trees and the undergrowth. He draws his inspiration from the actual place itself and nature.
