The styles of these works range from traditional genre to early Modernism, covering themes which range from the glamor of the urban Belle Epoque to the exotic Orientalists. The top lots of this sale are:-An oil on canvas painting titled ‘L’Attente’ by William Adolphe Bouguereau, depicting the image of a beautiful young girl dressed in a white chiton in the backdrop of mountainous landscape behind her. The artwork is measured at 115.9 x 66.7 cm. Estimate: $600,000- $800,000;-An oil on canvas painting titled ‘A Signal’ by John William Godward R.B.A, depicting a female figure, seated on a marble bench waving with an object in her hand with the blue sea behind her, forming a stark horizon. The artwork is measured at 80.6 x 61 cm. Estimate: $350,000- $450,000;-A pastel on canvas portrait of Duchess of Marlborough Consuelo Vanderbilt by French artist Paul Cesar Helleu, measured at 144 x 97.5 cm. Estimate: $300,000- $500,000;-A 1920 oil on canvas portrait of Harry La Montagne on a Grey by British artist Sir Alfred James Munnings P.R.A., R.W.S, measured at 73.7 x 92 cm. Estimate: $300,000- $500,000;-An oil on canvas painting titled ‘The Black Hat’ by Sir Alfred James Munnings P.R.A., R.W.S, measured at 50.7 x 61 cm.
