Sotheby’s HK will present a themed auction of Contemporary Chinese Ink during their Autumn Sale, scheduled to take place on October 4. The 95-lot-sale, titled “Contemporary Ink Art: Journey,” is expected to raise a total of HK$ 31-42 million (US$ 3.9-5.4 million), offering “fresh-to-market” artworks from global private collections. The auction will include some of the most established artists from Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China such as C.C. Wang, Li Huayi, Liu Dan, Liu Guosong, Lui Shou-kwan, and Zeng Xiaojun. Sotheby’s will also offer works by female artists from the region, including the likes of Irene Chou and Tseng Yuho. This significant sale comes at a time when the art market seems to be leaning towards contemporary Chinese ink painting as the next desired commodity. This was evidenced by the successful April sales at Sotheby’s HK this year, producing multiple artist records for Liu Dan and Zheng Chongbin, according to news sources. “Contemporary Ink Art is increasingly recognized among collectors worldwide as an innovative aesthetic category with extraordinary momentum,” said Katherine Don, the Head of Contemporary Ink Art at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The theme of the sale stems from Liu Guosong’s “Blue Moon Landscape,” which is “inspired by man’s journey to the moon, as well as the juxtaposition of unusual early and iconic later works showing the evolution of individual artistic styles.”“Blue Moon Landscape,” 1969/1990 and Li Huayi’s “Pines In Pureland Mist,” 2012 lead the “Journey” sale, estimated at HK$ 4-5 million (US$520,000-645,000) and HK$ 3.3-3.6 million (US$ 426,000-465,000) respectively. Ink works by Chen Qikuan, Lui Shou-kwan, and C.C. Wang were selected from a private art collection, acquired by a “visionary collector” during the 1980s. According to Sotheby’s HK, “this collection is a diary of pioneering ink art works grounded in the Chinese paintings tradition.”The “Contemporary Ink Art: Journey” sale will take place on October 4 at Hall 3, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre, Hong Kong.
