Christie’s will host a solo show of “The Art of Luo Zhongli,” its first one-person exhibition for an Asian artist, in Hong Kong and Shanghai this summer.Featuring a selection of some 40 works that illustrate the varied trajectory of Luo’s career over the past four decades, “The Art of Luo Zhongli” cover both early works and recent creations, including both painting and sculpture.Born in Chongqing in 1948, Luo graduated from the Sichuan Academy of Fine Arts in 1981 and currently serves as dean of the Academy. Alongside Zhou Chunya and Zhang Xiaogang, Luo maintains close ties with his native Sichuan province, giving his oeuvre a distinct folk aesthetic firmly embedded in the context of everyday life. This commitment, however, has not translated into a stagnant style — Luo has veered from a straightforward realist style in the 1980s to a more mannered folk idiom in the 90s, for instance.Eric Chang, Deputy Chairman of Asia and International Director of Asian 20th Century & Contemporary Art, said: “Christie’s is pleased to present a solo exhibition of a leading Chinese contemporary artist’s works for the first time in Asia. Achieving the height of success inside China and overseas, the artist still persists in his drive for innovation and perfection. Christie’s shares the same values and will continue to introduce outstanding Asian and Chinese contemporary artists onto the global stage.”Luo Zhongli’s exhibition runs May 28-30 at the Convention Hall, Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center before moving to Christie’s Art Space in the Ampire Building in Shanghai from June 10 through July 15, 2015.Follow @ARTINFOHongKong
