Bonhams has announced that it will auction a selection of works from the Thomas Vroom Collection, one of Europe's largest, most valuable, and significant collections of Aboriginal art and the cornerstone of the Aboriginal Art Museum in Utrecht, The Netherlands. The single-owner sale will be held on September 6 in Sydney and will feature works spanning more than 100 years of continuous Aboriginal.Dutch collector Thomas Vroom first encountered and developed a passion for Australian Indigenous art in New York in the late 1980s. Over a period of two decades he established an amazing collection, acquiring works from major auctions, seeking out and buying entire old collections, and purchasing contemporary works on trips to remote regions as well as from galleries and dealers. The sale features important works by some of the most influential Australian Indigenous art such as the late Dorothy Napangati Robinson, Kathleen Petyarre, Eubena Nampitjin, Queenie Mckenzie, and Ngoia Pollard, to name a few. One of the highlights is a group of 30 works by the celebrated Indigenous artist Emily Kngwarreye, including works from her earlier periods to later large-scale works. The auction has been consigned to Bonhams by Tim Klingender Fine Art, advisors to The Thomas Vroom Collection. In the auction catalogue, Klingender says that was contacted by Vroom last year to advise that he had decided to sell his vast collection. Klingender and a number of Bonhams Specialists have selected more than 260 artworks for the inaugural Australian auction.“Thomas is a confident collector and always bought what appealed to him and his interest in the field was broad from the outset,” says Kligender. “The collection includes early artefacts, bark paintings and ceremonial sculptures, through to historical paintings from the Kimberley and Central Deserts and the most contemporary canvases.”The “Aboriginal Art: The Thomas Vroom Collection” sale will be held on September 6 at The Jewish Women's Association Hall in Sydney.
