Imagine virtually canvassing the world’s top museums, and with a click of a mouse, adding your favorites to a shopping cart. This is, more or less, the Auctionata experience. On December 7, the online auction house will give well-heeled bidders the chance to one-stop shop from “100 Masterworks,” spanning the 19th through 21st centuries. The grand finale of 16 auctions in an 11-day series titled “The Art Journey,” this collection comprises some of the most important artists in the art world (including Henri Matisse, Fernando Botero, Andy Warhol, and Damien Hirst.)Conducted entirely online with an auctioneer presenting each work in a livestream video accompaniment, viewers will be lead through highlights such as Henri Matisse’s “Tête de Jeune Fille,” 1950, a bold example of Fauvism from the founder of the movement. Other highlights include a striking abstract composition (1954) by Franz Kline and a fruit still life in watercolor (1976) by Fernando Botero, an important figure in modern Latin American art.Admittedly, this auction is a “mish-mash” of styles, movements, and artists, according to Auctionata’s co-founder Susanne Zacke. But with this kind of inventory, Zacke found no reason to keep the auction under wraps. “I’m specifically proud of the 100 masterworks. It is the result of our expanded network hunting down prize pieces,” she said. Starting prices for this auction range from approximately $5,000 to $150,000.While the Berlin-based auction house has existed only since 2012, it has already gained a substantial following by auctioning off anything from Fabergé eggs to vintage Phillipe Patek watches. Having raised $45 million in March to expand its inventory, Auctionata is the largest auction house of its kind in Germany today. All auctions will be broadcasted via livestream and are accessible on www.auctionata.com or via the Auctionata Live iPhone App.
