Sotheby’s has announced that it will offer a selection of works by Pablo Picasso that remained in the artist’s studio throughout his lifetime. Comprising 187 works, including 70 ceramics and terracotta sculptures as well as 106 works on paper, the collection is being sold by the artist’s granddaughter, Marina Picasso, and will be offered in a stand-alone sale on February 5 in London with an estimate of £6.9–9.8 million. or $10.5–14.8 million. “This wonderful collection presents an intimate view of the artist in his moments of creation, as though we are standing at Picasso’s shoulder, able to observe his creative process as he reinvented himself as an artist over and over again,” said Helena Newman, Co-Head of Impressionist & Modern Art Worldwide. “Picasso’s drawings and unique ceramics allow one to get right up close to the artist at the very genesis of the development of many of his core elemental themes.”Highlights from the collection, which spans every decade and genre of the artist’s career, include the pen and ink on paper “Chevalier picador dans l'arène” 1951 (estimate: £120,000-180,000 / $179,000-269,000); the pen on paper cut-out “Visage de femme” 1962 (estimate: £180,000-250,000 / $269,000-373,000); and the unique painted ceramic jug “Femme à la robe entrouverte” 1955 (estimate: £35,000-45,000 / $52,500-67,500).Highlights from the collection will be on view at Sotheby’s New York Galleries from January 13 -17.
